Title: MONITORING EMPLOYEE EMAILS: IS THERE ANY ROOM FOR PRIVACY?
Authors: William P Smith, Filiz Tabak
Abstract: This paper reviews the current knowledge about email monitoring and draws conclusions for practice. The discussion entails justifications for employers’ email monitoring along with an analysis of supporting statutory and case law, Web-based private emails, as well as international implications of email monitoring. The paper also provides evidence of work outcomes of email monitoring regarding employee attitudes and behaviors such as organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and performance. The paper explores these considerations within the framework of exiting research evidence and presents practical implications for not only email monitoring, but also potentially for the broader issues of privacy in the workplace.
