The heart of Myrtle P. Bell's teaching, research, and service is diversity and social issues in organizations, reflecting her commitment to pursuing equality and inclusion for members of devalued groups and to doing work that matters. Her research appears in outlets such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Group and Organization Management and in numerous edited volumes. Myrtle’s recent research focuses on religion as an aspect of diversity, obesity discrimination, employment decisions for bilingual workers, and work-family issues for low wage workers. Her book, Diversity in Organizations (2007, Thomson/Cengage), is a comprehensive, research-based book for teaching and learning about diversity

Myrtle has served as chair of the Gender and Diversity in Organization (GDO) division and on the GDO Executive Committee. She is the Professional Insights Editor of Equal Opportunities International, a journal devoted to research on equality, diversity, and inclusion; past associate editor of the Journal of Management Education; and co-edited the 2008 special issue of the Academy of Management Learning and Education on diversity education and training. She has received numerous awards for her service to the community, students, and the profession, and for serving as a mentor and role model to women and people of color. Most recently, Myrtle received the Mary McLeod Bethune Heritage Award for Education from the Arlington, TX National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (2007), the PhD Project Management Doctoral Students Trailblazer Award (2008), and GDO’s Janet Chusmir Service Award (2008).  


Myrtle is on the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she received her PhD in human resources and organizational behavior with a minor in sociology. She also has degrees from the University of Notre Dame (BBA) and Louisiana State University (MBA). Prior to joining academia, Myrtle worked in finance and human resources in industry for more than a decade.
